I was asked to photograph my cousin Vinay and his wife Rashmi for a post-card campaign Team Vinay is about to launch. If you haven't been following along, Vinay is battling AML, a form of Leukemia. Even after several chemotherapy sessions, he needs a bone marrow match. Please visit HelpVinay.org to read about where you can register and potentially save lives; Vinay's and others like him.
Vinay could very easily be your brother, your husband, your father. As a South Asian it is infinitely more challenging to find a match, but it doesn't have to be that way if only more South Asians like you (yes you reading this blog post) will commit to registering yourselves in the national marrow donor database. I have called you all, and some of you have readily done so, to step up and register. It's quick and painless. So, please DO IT NOW.
Here are the images I shot of Vinay and Rashmi over the weekend. Which one would you pick for the post-card campaign? Make your choice and then leave a comment that others will appreciate. Thank you.

#3 is the best of the lot while all the three are equally good for evoking a good response for motivating registration. Love, SSB

Sesh, I like the first one here where they are sitting on the hospital bed. It gives the viewers an intimate look of how life has been for Vinay and Rashmi for the past few months. The reality of the situation hits you like a brick wall – I think people will feel more connected in a way and get motivated to register. Like you say, it could be anyone of us in this situation – the bigger the registry, the more chances of finding a match and hence survival…Vinay and Rashmi are in my prayers…Sree.

All are beautiful, but for mass mailing purposes, I vote for #1. It evokes so much emotion.

#1…heartbreaking to me since I’ve been following his search, but I love it since I see so much strength in both of their faces. Plus for the purposes of the postcard, I feel like it directly draws you into their daily lives.

#1, definitely. The subtle placement of the IV is important, and makes it more of an “issue shot” as opposed to a “family shot.”

All are good but I particularly like #1. Vinay looks poised strong as he faces this challenge and has the expression of a warrior. The tube in his arm shows his vulnerable situation. Rashmi leans on him in this picture expressing her devotion. There’s something else about this picture that represents a sort of loss or losing. It’s incredibly human. The other two photos are good but are missing what #1 has. Just my opinion. Vinay, I hope your marrow transplant works. I pray for you.
