Get out and play with Flickr Toys

A Photographer's Quest For Perfect Light. Sure, you are going to look like a dork, but your images are going to rock!

I love words but sometimes I just can't spell worth a hill of beans. Instead of reaching out for my favorite dictionary online or hard copy, I am going to use this little USB-based device that Meriam Webster has produced. “In addition to the 300,000 word dictionary and 500,000 word thesaurus you get other applications as well like; grammar guide, confusable function that alerts you to words spelled differently that sound the same (there, their) and a crossword puzzle solver.”

A little whacky, but Dr. Russell Brown has a show you digital photographers should not miss. His Photoshop tips are simply great and his Services, a pack of scripts for Adobe Photoshop CS2, are a must have.

Dan Roam's Digital Roam is for visual thinkers. His book, “The Back of the Napkin: Solving problems with pictures” will be published in 2008.

Ship Breakers At Asia Society

Asia Society in New York is playing host to a series of images of ship breakers in Bangladesh by photojournalist Robert Bailey.

“Explore one of many dilemmas faced by developing nations rapidly globalizing with this photography display. Bangladesh’s ship-breaking yards literally break apart old ships from all over the world, transforming them into scrap metal. These yards provide mass employment for Bangladeshi workers, many of whom have low-skills and few employment alternatives. However, the working conditions are extremely hazardous. Among other dangers, the shipbreakers are exposed to high levels of toxic chemicals that are handled without protection or regulation. As demand expands and competition grows among countries with low levels of industrialization, the acuteness of this dilemma will only increase. These photographs highlight the quiet dignity of manual laborers engaged in this difficult work.”

Bomb Blasts

“Babu, 22, the main earning person of his family, lost a leg in a grenade attack on the main opposition political party office in Narayanganj, during a general meeting. 2005. Since 1999, Bangladesh has experienced a spate of ‘unexplained’ bomb blasts and grenade attacks, killing at least 300 till the end of 2005. Since August 17, 2005, a new wave of attacks have begun.

The victims have received no compensation or any form of assistance from the state.”
