Adobe Photographers Directory Launched

Adobe is teaming up with the American Society of Media Photographers to develop a comprehensive directory of photographers, first across the US and eventually across the globe. Of course, you have to become a member of the ASMP.

“The Adobe Photographers Directory will be searchable by geographic location and by photographic specialty, and it will include portfolio images. Thus, designers can quickly zero in on the best candidates for the job. And because the photographers’ experience and competence are evidenced by their membership in ASMP, designers can feel confident in the professionalism of any one they hire.”

Is Adobe expecting a 50-50 split on the $300 general membership dues and the $50 Find A Photographer fee ASMP will collect?

Desi Bloggers Manhattan Meetup … Link List!

The list of desi bloggers meeting on April 2nd in Manhattan has now grown to 16! I am updating the RSVPs to this event now in a special and temporary link list on my site – Tiffinbox. Look to the right column under “Manhattan Masala.”

March 31st is the deadline for all RSVP's to this event; if you are a desi blogger and can make it to a very casual gathering please email me at tiffinbox[at]pipalproductions[dot]com. As I promised Pooja Makhijani there will be no speeches, no toasts, no roasts, just plain schmoozing.

Speaking of Pooja – she has generously donated two copies of her book, Under Her Skin. The first two bloggers [other than Pooja and myself of course] to arrive at the restaurant by 1.30 p.m. will receive these two signed copies. Let the race begin!

Dayanita Singh’s Photography Exhibits

“All photographs, installations and conversations in the Chairs exhibition are a blend of understanding and wondering.”

New Delhi-based photographer Dayanita Singh defies labeling. While she got her start as a graduate of the ICP program in documentary photography and cut her teeth with Mary Ellen Mark as her assistant, Singh's own imprint on the photography landscape has been rather diverse.

About 10 years back she set upon a photography documentary as she was allowed to follow the life of Mona, a eunuch. That resulted in a book called, “Myself Mona Ahmed.” Exhausted documenting only social justice issues, she took a break of sorts to document the lives of people from a social class she knows best – the rich elite in India. That too resulted in a book called “Privacy.”

Dayanita Singh has a string of exhibits in the US; mostly in Boston and New York city. A group show she is in called PRESENCE is located at Sepia International and is on till April 16th. Another group exhibit she is a part of called EDGE OF DESIRE, at the Asia Society is on until June 1. The exhibit in Boston, at the Isabelle Stewart Gardner museum, is on until May 8th. The title of the show is simply – CHAIRS.

Color by Number

When you see the number 5 do you see red? If you do, you are likely to have a condition called synaesthesia or the intermingling of the five senses. You aren't unique, though. Apparently one in 2000 have this.

“This cross-wiring might develop, they believe, by a failure of the ‘pruning' of nerve connections between the areas as the brain develops while still in the womb.”

I wonder if the colors and numbers experienced by these people are the same if they individually have their own unique combinations. If you are staring in to a computer screen day-in and day-out as I do, to color correct images, one can only hope that photographers and photo editors aren't afflicted by this. It would be sheer hell to deal with seeing colors and numbers at the same time. Heck, growing up in India reciting the requisite multiplication tables gave me the shivers; I think I saw red, blue, yellow and finally black (when I passed out).

Flip Eye

Twenty-year old Gautam Narang's website is a candy store of images. One never knows what to expect at each click of a link. The image below captures the fervor of Hindutva rather eloquently. The yellow/orange background and Shiva's tridents silhouetted in the foreground says more than a hodgepodge of images. It adheres to the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principle. Beautifully executed.

Triennale of Photography, III

The New York Times section on travel of all places had a blurb about a massive annual photo exhibit in Hamburg, Germany.

“Ten museums and more than 70 galleries in and around the city will host the third Triennale of Photography from April 14 to June 19, featureing 107 exhibitions of photographers' work from around the world.”
