Tonight, Zana Briski and Ross Kaufman have won the Best Documentary Oscar for Born Into Brothels.
To help the children you see in the film visit the Kids With Cameras website.
I have yet to see the film, but I have heard only great things about it. Anyone want to pipe in with a comment about it?

Hi Seshu
Born Into Brothels is a terrific documentary. It tells of Zana Briski’s discovery that the children of sex workers in Kolkata see a window into another world through their cameras….but also confronts the reality that getting through to that other world, to a new and different life, is really, really hard.
Beyond the documentary, Zana has used her experience in two ways: to raise money for the children themselves, and to spread the idea that photography can help children who live extraordinarily difficult lives see their world at a new angle, and for some, grasp a different life.
But as with all well-told stories, Born Into Brothels leaves out a lot.
It leaves out, for instance, the work of many other photographers who have introduced young people who have few worldy prospects to a new life by introducing them to photography.
Shahidul Alam and his colleages have worked for eight years with a group of young photographers who call themselves Out of Focus. (www.drik.net).
Nancy McGirr teaches photography to children who worked in a garbage dump in Guatemala. (www.fotokids.org. Here’s a story about her http://www.abc.net.au/foreign/stories/s910493.htm)
And Zana Briski is doing her best to make her work in Kolkata more than a one-time event. She started Kids With Cameras (www.kids-with-cameras.org)
to send other photographers to countries around the world to train children to become photographers. Gigi Cohen (whoalso has worked with Child Labor & the Global Village) is currently in Haiti.
.
I hope that all these efforts can be sustained, and can help at least some children become professional photographers I look forward to seeing the amazing images that emerge from among the child photographers of what Shahidul Alam calls the Majority World.

Movie: Born Into Brothels
I saw a moving flick last night, entitled Born Into Brothels. It was about the children of sex workers in Calcutta’s red light district. I cried.
You have got to see this. I’m simply too tired right now to post anything concrete.
