Blueeyes Magazine Sweeps NPPA Awards

“I just wanted to share the good news, that many of you already know, with everyone — Blueeyes Magazine received 7 awards in the 2005 NPPA Best of Photography awards web division, damn near sweeping the news, features, and sports categories, and also winning the overall Best Photo Story on the web award against the entire field of big bad media outlets for the special collaborative group project ‘Haiti Turns 200.' I'm flattered by the news, and view the entire thing as a reflection of the amazing work that I've been so honored to help share with a lot of others out there looking for great story telling and seeing.”

SAJA Is Calling All Photographers

Well, actually calling all photojournalists to submit work created in 2004 for the 2005 SAJA Photoforum to be held during the SAJA convention. The convention and job fair will be held from June 16 through 19, at Columbia University.

I am coordinating the photo exhibit and will play judge for the photo awards. Other judges will be announced shortly. Please download the PDF for instructions on how to submit your work [content & quality], what will be considered for the show and the annual photo awards. The deadline for this is April 18.

Please note that print and broadcast journalists with submissions your postmark deadline was today!

Southern Short Course in News Photography

Sorry this is such short notice but the Southern Short Course in Photography will be held at the Crowne Plaze Hotel [108 First Street, Macon, Georgia, tel# 478-746-1461] from March 31 through April 3.

Sam Abell, Grant Blankenship, Mark Damon, Greg Eans, Gary Fong, Denise McGill, Johnny Horne, Kenny Irby, Jock Lauterer, Melissa Lyttle, Jack Rowland, Scott Strazzante and Mike Weimar will all present their work.

Pre-registration, at $60, is open till March 23. You will pay $75 at the door. Students can register for $30. As always these events have a photo contest and portfolio reviews.

Photo + Journalism

“… many times the picture-making process does not begin when you click the shutter. The picture making process begins with pre-visualizing and understanding the core aspects of the story. If a reporter or editor cannot articulate what the story is about effectively then it will be very hard for you to meet or exceed anyone's expectations. The key here is that good journalism is a collaboration between words and images.”

If there were a loudspeaker handy this is the message I would be yelling out to everybody. Photojournalism is NOT just about photography. It's photography and journalism. Easy as that may sound, the misperceptions reign supreme even among journalists who write for a living. Dennis Dunleavy – thanks for expressing this topic so lucidly!

Call For Submissions: 2005 SAJA PHOTOFORUM

Well, it's official. The 2005 SAJA PHOTOFORUM is on. They are looking for the very best in photojournalism from South Asia; from those who work in South Asia or who have focussed on the South Asian diaspora.

Only digital entries will be accepted and they will be due on April 18, 2005. For the entry form and how to submit yourr entry, please click the Adobe Acrobat icon you see here to the right. SAJA 2005 Photoforum Entry Form You will need Acrobat Reader to view the file.

They are doing things a bit differently this year. For the first time, they are combining entries for the SAJA Photo Awards and the SAJA PHOTOFORUM. So, your entries will be judged for the photo awards and may also be exhibited in front of 600 journalists at the SAJA annual convention, held at Columbia University.
